GA/LA
Committee
While associated with the GA/LA Melrose Place
project, John was in charge of "Quality Control" for
all things sculptural. As one of the initial graduate
students approached by Mel Chin, John was asked to create Peter
Burns’ "Loving Cup", the very first GA/LA artwork created
and sent to Spelling Production Studios for insertion into the
set. For the next two years, during which John graduated from
the University of Georgia, John was involved in every
piece of three-dimensional work created for the show, often fabricating
the piece alone or in collaboration with Joe Girandola and Mel
Chin. Mel chose John and Joe as the GA/LA members to venture to
the production of Melrose Place to visit the
sets to take measurements and formulate ideas, and to travel to
Cal Arts to oversee construction of more three-dimensional objects
scheduled for insertion onto the show. When the project culminated
in a showing at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary
Art’s Temporary Contemporary, John and Joe were asked
to oversee the construction and installation of the show over
two months in the spring of 1997. For more information on GA/LA
